With the goal of "one patient, one record, one team, one statement," the enterprise-wide, integrated health information system known as Partners eCare took a major step forward as hundreds gathered for Discovery Sessions at BWH, BWFH and DFBWCC last month.
During Discovery Day, staff from across the hospital and its distributed campus gave tours and provided an overview of their respective workflow processes to members of Epic, the vendor that will assist us in designing and implementing Partners eCare.
Over the next five years, Partners eCare will fully integrate clinical and administrative information systems across Partners HealthCare, including computerized physician order-entry, Patient Scheduling, the ED, Pharmacy/Medication Administration, clinical documentation and others.
"It was a successful and productive day," said Shelly Anderson, vice president of BWH Strategic Implementation, who is spearheading the implementation of the eCare initiative for Brigham and Women's Health Care (BWHC). "I believe that Epic representatives walked away with a better understanding of the current processes, which is extremely important as they partner with us to implement this new system.."
Nearly 250 people, including Epic representatives, Partners Information Systems staff and BWHCers, took part in the first two days of Discovery Sessions, which included roundtable discussion sessions and workflow tours in Ambulatory Services, the Emergency Department, Pharmacy, the NICU, Labor and Delivery, Operating Rooms, and Perioperative Services.
"It was an opportunity for our clinicians to speak about their work and current clinical system challenges," said Theresa Jasset, MSM, RN, CNOR, program director for Perioperative Nursing Informatics, who led a tour of the PACU and the OR.
As part of the design process, additional Discovery Sessions have either taken place or are planned for other hospitals within Partners. Additional Discovery Sessions will take place around BWHC as well. Following Discovery Sessions, Validation Sessions will begin, taking place between February and June. When all the steps are completed, this new enterprise-wide clinical system will help in the care of the nearly 5.7 million patients across Partners, and will also help advance our research and education missions.

BWH and BWFH are the first entities within Partners to deploy eCare and will be fully implemented within three years.
